I was suprised to find a web site dedicated to NAxos.I am visiting naxos for more then ten years, since my first visit in 1988.Every summer no matter where i go I pass from Naxos.I would like to see some pictures in high resolution and if possible available for download ,if too large to fit on a page. The beauty of this island id wasted on poor quality Jpeg's and Gif's.

Hello there! I think that it is a really nice effort. I first saw the site last year when it was fresh. You 've made a significant progress since then. The site is easy to access with very interesting subjects. I think that you should find better photos of the island. The photos concerning the beaches are not the best that somebody could find. Also one of the villages photo is not representative at all. I am talking about Filoti's photo which shows only 1/3 of the whole village. It is the prettiest village of the island but the photo is not suitable for it. I am from Filoti and I have to say that I am not very happy with that. Hello! Naxos is very beautiful! The bay of Kalandos is the best in Greece, especially in the end of August until September. It is very nice to sleep in the jeep there! I hope, if there won`t be no hotels in the near future and that they will not finish the asphalt route. I hope that only the sheeps and the farmers will own this bay every time,like now!

Great site! I haven't been able to view your movie files. They are probably compressed with Microsoft Video Format for which there is no available decompressor in quicktime. I thought I was over Naxos...until I saw this page. I was in Naxos this summer with my bestfriends, and we had the time of our lifes. Its not so hard to imagine that the beaches, or the see is beautiful. But the stars suprised me. How could the stars be more beautiful than any other place? Now I know, I will never get over Naxos. I visited Naxos in 1982 with my wife when we were young, the island was new to the tourist route. we visited Agia Anna which was served by a boat bus. There were only a few tavernas and pensions then. I remember a New Zealand girl running a bar, I fixed her electrical problems and my wife and I ate for free for the rest of the holiday, I wonder where she is now along with the German friends we made. It would be good if there were more places to stay included - for example, the place my husband and I have been to regularly is not included and it is fantastic! I last visited Naxos in 1991 and fell in love - some things don't work out - I have recently become a member of the cyber generation and suddenly the yearning has returned - to go back, to sit with Mackie in his bar, to watch the sun rise, to eat breakfast with the fisherman and of course to see beautiful Helena again (last known to be living in Athens and teaching). Hi all there who remembers us, we΄ve visitet Apllonas several time between 1988 and 1995 and now we miss ΄΄our΄΄ lovely island and its people very much. Sorrily we could not visit Naxos after our son was born because of a special health problem. So we just can dream and remember the best time of our lifes and the fun we had with Nikos Andriί and his family and Apostoles in Apollonas. Not only the island but more than anywhere else the people are great. We hope to come as soon as posibble back to ΄΄our΄΄ island. To all who will visit Naxos I want to tell that it is very interresting to take a car and visit all the small villages all over the island and dont be angoius to take the ΄΄ bad΄΄ roads. Most time you will find the finest places if you leave the tourist roads. But please be careful and keep the island clean. Show respect towards the people and the tradition as well as towards the nature. Perhaps you will find the possibility to help a fisherman or a farmer at his work? It is a very good way to understand their way of life. If anyone meets Nikos(he must have had birthday in January so tell him XONIA POLA), his family ore Apostoles and his family please tell them our greetings(perhaps Lefteris has become father in between?). Info about Agios Prokopios. A very nice little village about 6 km from Naxos chora (downtown). It doesnt take more than 10 min, with Taxi (around 1500-2000 Dr) or with bus (750, I think). Its the best beach in whole Naxos, but also a lot of tourists there. Its only walking distance to the neighbour beach in Agia Anna. There are soms restaurants and shops along the beach. /Anni

A wonderful webpage which has brought back alot of memories. I spent a month on Naxos in 1993, for those of you concerned with schedules and timetables, forget them. Take in the relaxed atmosphere of this island and throw away any itinerary you may have....I planned on spending a few days and stayed over a month. To me it remembers a very very sunny and funny holiday with my boyfriend in PLAKA CAMPING last summer. I think it's all said before! My family and I stayed in Agios Prokopios last summer, and we are already looking forward to coming back next year. We loved the greek cooking, and one of the faourites for lunch was "Gyros in Pitta", - if anyone could give us the receipe for this, we would really appreciate it! Enjoyed your Website, though I do have a strange occurrence to report. When my girlfriend and I were staying in a hotel in Naxos Town on the night of May 31, we awoke to find that half of our furniture had been moved while we slept, including our bed, which had to way a few hundred pounds. We thought there may have been a minor earthquake during the night, but my girlfriend's side of the room was undisturbed. Not that I necessarily believe in this stuff, but have there been any stories of ghosts in Naxos?

Was very happy to find your site as I spent time in the islands 12 years ago, but did not visit Naxos. From my guide books and now confirmed by this site, we are going to bypass Paros, where I first fell in love with Greece, and go to Naxos in September instead. We planned to also see Fira, Amorgos and Folegandros, but after reading the comments, maybe we'll just stay put once we get there.
Would like more info. on rooms to let in the Chora and beaches. We like simple places with real folks, really do not like hotels. Perhaps you could have a more extensive listing? Also, having the prices for the places without having to email would be nice.
We're photographers, so maybe we could donate some images if you're interested.
If anyone has a good place to stay they know of, let us know.

I just came home from Naxos after 2 weeks there (3rd time) and your web page is nice to be able to go to to remind me of the very nice time I had there. It would be nice if you could update it a bit more (new pictures sometimes) and add some more of the hotels there. We stayed at the Hotel Dilino in Agios Prokopios (for the second time) and they are no where on your web page (as are other smaller hotels). I do not like to stay in big hotels and so would like to see other alternatives on sites like yours. Also it might give some of the smaller places a bit more business. You might also put something on about the arts in Naxos. You have a very nice sculptor from Apiranthos that you might feature as well as some other artists I guess. Naxos is pretty much my favourite island in Greece (I have been to several) and so would like to know more about what is going on ther. Naxos! Great website, great place. I worked at Ocean Club for a few years 93,94 and 95 before I transferred to the now defunct Infinity. I was regularly shouted at by Vengilis and Christophe, the bosses.at Ocean Club. I loved your presentation. As a third generation Naxian living in America, I almost felt as if I had visited Naxos myself. I am earnestly interested in finding my relatives in Naxos before I make a trip to Naxos. Is there a public information website with birth records? If anybody reads this who might be a relative, I would appreciate an e-mail responce. My Grandfather was Nikolaos Giorgios Policratis (born 1895 Aperanthos) son of Giorgios Yianni Policratis (son of Nikolaos Yianni Policratis) and Phyllis (unknown maiden name) and his brothers were Emmanuel and Yianni and his sisters were Eirini and Kaliope. He left for America in 1910. My Grandmother was Ekaterina Libertas (born 1911 Aperanthos) daughter of Yianni Nikolaos Libertas (of Aperanthos) and Eirini Gavalla ( daughter of Emmanuel Gavalla of Tragea). First of all, I would stay in naxos town (chora) and not at the beach, because everything is close to chora and its better to be close to the clubs and bars instead of being close to the beach. Because you can go ba bus to the beach and it costs only 250 Greek drachmes, which is not very much. the bus comes pretty iften, so it very comfortable. Hotels, like the Porto Naxos are very nice, aswell as the galaxy at agios prokopios beach. smaller hotels are Nissaki beach hotel and hotel Zevgoli which is situated in chora's oldtown- well I hope you will have an axcellent vacation. Hi fans, It's Russell the 'Tool' Darke here - I spent some great summers out in Naxos, I used to work at Infinity - it's strange but it used to be a really popular club until I started working there! I was known by quite a few of the locals - they had a strange nickname for me - it was something like, 'shandeemaan' I never really worked that one out, anyhow, I think this a great website and it brings back a lot of memories, for instance that fond memory of taking a pedelo at St Goerges beach and losing my sonneti top. However, whenever I think about Naxos - in all the time I spent there over many summers, I still wonder, Why I couldn't get laid?

Very good web site - shame about some of the guest comments, I remember Shandeemaan Tool Darke. This guy was a real Stool - he used to visit the arcades where I usually frequented and spend all his time losing to this guy they called the RG on International Soccer II, I also remember him shouting in a incomprehensible fashion at other locals in the street, they used to look at him in disgust and laugh at his receding hairline, actually they used to call him Phil Collins, anyway keep up the good work Naxosnet but please prevent Tools signing the guestbook.

I do in fact remember a Tool who went by the name of RG, or Gwyn Williams (whatever) and a great story that was floating around the winding streets of the Castro in 1997. Apparently, he scored some filthy dirt bird from Devon whom he thought would be ripe for points, however, upon getting back to his room he found he had a problem. "No you're not leaving yet, not 'til I get it up!" were the words that repeatedly resounded around the alleys of the old town, waking up half of the locals and sending any passing tourists into fits of laughter. Indeed, one of the local fishermen, setting of for his early morning catch, reported seeing a young man jumping up and down upon a roof, close to the Paralia shouting every profanity under the sun at his disfunctional tool. Shame for him, as he never got laid that summer, a fact that was often repeated by the indignant locals, angry at having their slumber disturbed by a Welsh stool with a misfiring tool!

Heh fans, It's Russell Tool Darke again - I feel I should justify my comments I made a couple of days ago regarding the passage that I submitted saying that I basically could not get laid on the island of Naxos. Over a period spanning almost four summers I constantly tried yet failed at bedding some foreign totty - sure, I had a few opportunities - but whenever it came down to match point I'm afraid the, 'old boy' always let me down. That's not to say that I couldn't justify the means - but let's just say I've always been premature in this department. What makes it worse was that over a few seasons that I worked out there - I was in direct competition with the masters themselves, RG, Commando Whitmore and Private Pratt. I used to particpate in a points contest that involved more points awarded for more activities with the (in my case - unfortunate) female species. Needless to say, I always finished last! However the point to my story? Well, I'm making another trip out to Naxos this year intent on breaking my duck, it's about time I had a bit of luck - so I'm appealing to any female out there - maybe you've been acqainted with me in the past in Naxos - to please get in touch and provide me with some suitable tips in order to overcome my problem. What a coincidence, this is the island where my father, Peter Michael Zazanis, was born. He came to live in the United States when he was four years old, in 1918. He is now 86 years old.
I am the only one of his four children that has not been to Greece. One day if I do, I will definately come to Naxos! What a beautiful place!

I went to Naxos first in about 1978 and then in 1980. It really was paradise and I yearn to go back, which of course I can but with so many other places to explore I haven't got round to it. Would love to go with my husband and children - I still talk about it and my experiences there and the wonderful people I met - a young adonis called Costas for one - and then there was a lovely taxi driver who took us up into his village and gave us armfuls of apricot picked from his trees and we met his wife - everyone was just so friendly and the island one of the most beautiful places in the world. Hi tool fans, It Russell Tool Darke here again, I can't get enough of this website - it brings back so many fond memories of my time spent on Naxos. I also find this guest-book extremely therapeutic - talking about various stacks that I've made helps me endure my life as as tool. For instance let me tell you about the time I played rugby at Backwell school - I'd been at the school for a quite a few months and it didn't take me long to work out who was who in my year - for instance I knew not to mess with the tough guys, RG, Pratt, Locky etc.. they were the daddies and didn't take any shit. Anyhow I was playing rugby for house (fraternity whatever.) against another - we had a break in play, I was worried with my form and had a bit of a knee injury after slipping over a bannana skin at playtime in the playground earlier. It was time to scrum down and unfortunately I made the biggest mistake ever witnessed on a rugby field - yes a bigger mistake than even that team of sausage jockeys, England - I basically joined the wrong scrum!! I should have realised as soon as I pulled some guy out of the opposition scrum to get into position, but alas, once a tool always a tool, it was a humiliating experience and I was so upset that I pissed myself as I ran off the field! (much to the crowd's delight) But heh - talking about it now - possibly to thousands of people around the world helps - thankyou Naxosnet for this forum. Maybe I might even have enough courage to talk you through my king of all stacks with a certain dirt bird from Norway - which occured a few years ago in a shower on a roof in Chora! Hello Naxos fans -- my wife and I will be visiting Naxos for two days in September (after visiting Sifnos and Santorini). We will be staying at the Hotel Chateau Zevogli on Sept. 28 and 29. We are interested in restaurants, night life, and historic or religious places to visit. We live in the Florida Keys, so we probably will skip the beaches. Is it easy to get around the island? Do people rent cars or scooters? Any and all suggestions are welcome!

Hi everybody! We are two norwegian girls that spent one week in Naxos in may and must say that we just loved it. The beaches are great, the atmosphere is fantastic - it just make you get in a good mood. The bar PRIME is just the right place for bar-dancing and mai-tai,The Ocean club is more teckno, but does it for you if you want. We are going back aug. 27th for two weeks and can't wait to rock the floors. Hope to forfill our dreams of repeating the success.

Nebenbei haben wir ja auch noch Stefan + Steffi nebst ihren Eltern getroffen, aber daί wisst Ihr ja. Auίer das auf Naxos immer noch viel gebaut wird, ist weiter da nicht so viel passiert. Aber wir hatten im September echt super Wetter. Unsere Unterkunft war auch ganz nett, wird immer besser. Die ehemaligen Vermieter von uns stehen immer noch an der Bushaltestelle rumm und versuchen auf΄s όbelste an Kundschaft zu kommen, aber zum Glόck gucken die uns ja mit den Arsch nicht mehr an. What a fantastic site about an great island!It was fun reading your guestbook.I have been on Naxos many years ago (88,89 en 90)I was there with a friend and we had a great time.We were staying at Rodia studio's(near by georgios beach) I wonder if it still exits.We spend a lot of our time in Infinty.We have a lot of good memories... But thats many years ago.In the mean time we're both married,my friend and her husband have a baby; and I.....am still visiting (together with my husband) different Greec islands.We've been on Naxos for one day (during our holiday on Paros/Santorini in 2000) and it was quite a shock how may tourists there were.!It was just June!In my memories Chora was a sort of a big village, but it has changed into a town. I almost didn't recognize it.I even lost the way! I guess it was too long ago. But still I have some good memories about Naxos and now and then I wonder how life's there and what happened to the people we knew at that time....There's only one way to find out..!But for this year we already made our holiday plans, so maby anothere time....

I spent the summer of 2001 on Naxos and I would say you won't find a better atmosphere than M@trix Cyber Cafe and ask Kelly or Mikalis to make you an Amaretto Sour - they'll think you know me. The Med bar is perfect for Sunset and check it out again later in the evening. To any Aussies out there the owner looks a bit like Chopper Reed but he's a top bloke. Be nice to him and have a laugh with him and he'll love you. For Italien food outside Chora go to Ti Amor ( I think it's called) it's at Plaka they'll know what you are on about. Supberb food, setting and the owner is the lovliest lady. For Italien in Chora Town try il Girasole, they have a divine pasta with Fresh Salmon, Dill and Greek Yogurt. For Mexican Picasso's in Chora Town will leaving you feeling like a week asleep but happily asleep - great starters, mains, drinks and if you've never tried Banoffie Pie you must. All the other bars, restaurants and clubs all have great things to offer. I suggest try a different restaurant each meal, beach each day, bar each drink and club each boogie and by the end of your stay you'll know where you want to go back to. Everyone's friendly, the island is beautiful and make an effort to learn a bit of Greek - it's fun. Effaristo polli! Yasu!

Venezuelan Massacre
On April 11, 2002, many (unarmed) people were massacred in Venezuela when they peacefully marched towards the president's office, demanding some reforms. The ones who opened fire were criminal groups (as well as some military) sent by the Venezuelan government in order to terrorize the population and make them give up their peaceful demands. This message is to let the world know about this unprovoked mass killing of innocent people, most of which were women and children. Several of these people were from Europe or direct descendants of European people. Right now, in Venezuela, we are obviously under a dictatorial government with little respect for the rights of citizens. I have visited several Greek islands and your site is brilliant, it really got me inspired to visit. So with the help of the site I have booked everything myself including a stopover in Athens. More info about connections from the Rafina Port would be appreciated as Elefterios Venizelos Airport is now far away from Pireais. My fiance and I loved Naxos and plan to visit again for our honeymoon. Some of our best memories of our vacation in Europe were spent on the beautiful island. I highly recommend the hike up Mt. Zas to the cave of Zeus. There are amazing views and the cave is wonderfully naturally air conditioned.

Hoping some knowledgeable person can help me. I have a copy of a newspaper article about my family's war service. It is in very poor condition and I am hoping to get another copy, however, the newspaper in question cannot help as I don't have an approximate date of publication. I have a copy of the reverse of the article which details events of the days prior to publication. Briefly - 'The Greek island of Naxos liberated' and 'Wilhelmshaven was attacked by a strong force of escorted Lancasters in daylight on October 5 and was again visited by RAF night bombers a week ago' and 'The port had access through the Ems-Jade Canal but that avenue has been closed since RAF Bomber Command drained a large stretch of the Dortmund-Ems Canal'. If anyone thinks they could be of assistance with dating this article please email me off list and I will send a scan.

I happend to reach this site&recall last years vacation in Naxos. A very nice 2 weeks stay. I can still taste the aroma from the food at the best restaurant in Naxos-"Elli"-just 200m from the busstation by the harbour. The restaurant is situated so you can see the sun set through the Portara monument-very romantic and eyecatching! The little round bar at Agia Georgis beach is also a nice place where maybe the waitress "Meroppi" will take care of your orders. Rent your motorbikes at "Mikes"and you won΄t be disappointed! You by the best Raki ("Zoma") in the shop where you by all the dried herbes just in the towncenter as well as the best homemade olivoil. Kalli Tichi!(Good luck!)

The Alkyoni beach hotel is really one of the nicest hotels of Naxos and also their food is very very good. I strongly have to disagree with some of the other comments in this guest book about the beaches. The beach of St. George Bay is really dirty, cigarette buts and pieces of paper everywhere ! Because of the port and the north westerly winds the water of St George Bay is not so clean as told on this site. A lot of the other beaches are dirty as well and just behind the beaches you will see a lot of dumpsites for trash! Empty plastic water bottles etc. A tip for the LOCALS and TOURIST KEEP IT CLEAN. This trash just invites for more and more trash. I have worked in the tourist industry for 10 years and travelled all over the world. After having three good experiences in other parts of Greece I was amazed by the rudeness and the attitude from the people on Naxos and also Santorinni. If you read this comment you might think that I am a very negative person. This is NOT the case. In forming my opinion I was backupped by a lot of other people who visited Naxos. My advise to others is to go to Naxos and stay their for 1 or 2 days at the most! To the people of Naxos I would like to say START smiling and try to be friendly. Good luck and maybe see you in the future.

Aghios Prokopis... a breathtaking beach with white sand... just like paradise ! Don't miss Apollona ! It's really worth visiting !! ...especially if you want to eat really fresh fishes... And you will find the best taverna (small greek restaurant) in the village of Potamia (Ano Potamia... at the end of the road). It's the only taverna in town and you should try everything there !!!

Hi fans - yes its Russell 'the tool' Darke here again. Its been some time since I last posted a comment (7th June 2001 - I believe). The website although jaded, still brings back many interesting and somewhat painful memories spent on Naxos. There were some great times - taking it easy in the sun, sipping coffee on the Paralia whilst enjoying the company of the Port Police and informing on my mates over a certain pedalo incident! And I remember with great fondness taking Ocean cards of prospective punters on the street and handing them back Infinity cards - what ever happened to Infinity, you know on the beach - the place to be! What about the vivid sunsets - Apollos's golden rays slipping down over Paros? I used to watch them regularly whilst hunting around at the end of the main breakwater/sewage (site of pedalo accident)outlet for my Sonnetti top! However my time spent on Naxos was frequently interrupted by miserable experiences with foreign fluff. At this point I have to say I was under immense pressure to stay in the game - but attempts to keep up with the pace-setters, the likes of RG, Pratt, Commando Whitmore and even Gavin proved futile. In my defence this mental torment was the cause of my main stack, yes a bigger stack than wetting myself on the playing fields of Backwell School, even worse than blubbing on the coach after a Sixth form visit to the Bath Theatre Royal. It was of course the rendezvouz with a curvy Norwegian, in a shower, amongst the rooftops of Chora! She was leaving the island within the hour and my year of courtship was looking set to pay dividends! I was going to score the full 25 points with this last gasp effort. I remember looking over the aerials and rooftops down to St Georges beach, the meltimi was blowing - white seahorses racing the multitude of windsurfers across the bay - and thinking, yeah I'll be one of the lads! Well I joined the bit of foreign fluff in the shower room, she almost seemed perplexed that I it had taken so long to reach this stage - anyhow to cut a long story short - well I guess you readers have all seen American Pie, the scene with Nadia? Thats right - the pressure got to me - I literally shot my bolt! What humiliation, what shame.....but now as I share my story on Naxosnet - these sort of memories are slowly fading and I can only look back on the good times! Thankyou Naxos - don't want to sound premature at this stage - but I'm sure I'll be back!!!!!

I think that you should have more pictures of the main street or what you call it. I`ve been to naxos myself and that is what impressed me most, all the shops and bars at one place, it is great. and please have a picture of ocean club... most people who comes to naxos for party would probably want to know about ocean club, it is a great place to party. but all the other pictures are very nice, and they give a nice picture of the island.

I was in Naxos island 6 times yet - first time in 1976 as a hiking traveller, living in a hollow tree or in bamboo huts. Then, later with wife and children, one learned of them to walk in Angelo's taverna ( H XAPA) in Aggia anna, Angelo and Kula are dead now and my daughter is 20 years old. Angelos Taverne was the only open taverna in May 1976!!! and you had to walk there along the 3 bays from Chora, no local transports. The last time was in 1986. Naxos was alway the basic idea of Greek islands for me, the nature was mostly untouched, I know where the wild tortoises lived and where the best retsina was made. The water in the vilages came from fountains only Now after looking on your website I decided to see what's going on there today - 17 years after my last visit. I wonder wether I meet old friends, Greek and tourists. I start to dream again from Naxos!! Thank you for your beautiful site!! When I am back from the trip I'll let you know!!

Had a fantastic time on Naxos - Mike Antoneou at Katerinas bar and grill was always very cheery and served up a tasty lamb special with lot's of goodies for desert - Don't go you'll hate it!!! Only joking i just don't want you tourist kinds ruining our little piece of paradise :~) we've been going for the past 5 years for 4 weeks and loved every minute of it!

Having visited quite a number of the Greek Islands, I found that Naxos is the best and that includes its people, accommodation, food, beaches, etc. I stay over the mini market on the way in to Aghia Anna and would recommend it to anybody looking for first-class accommodation. I would like to be able to reach Naxos by air, but the flights are infrequent. Year by year it is getting more popular and more people are visiting, but I hope, against hope, it does not change.

I think this web sit is great. I am from Canada but this summer I visited my Grandpa's village (my true origins) and i fell in love with it. I stayed in Moni where i met the nicest people and best of friends. I had a blast. Naxo is so beautiful now, I can only image how it was half a century ago. Props to the Raquei (which my Grandpa was so known to drink) and the great wine (which was water to my Grandpa). It was great finding out where I come from. I am so proud to be a KONTOPIDIS!!!!!!!
