| Churches are another interesting attraction
for visitors. There are almost 50 churches in the capital town of Naxos,
the oldest of them being the church of Panagia Vlacherniotissa. There
is also the church of Mirtidiotissa built on a small island at the entrance
of the port of Naxos.
Nice icons can be found in the church of Zoodochos Pigi, also known as
the Cathedral.
There are 2 beaches in Naxos town. Agios Georgios beach is
the best known sandy beach of the capital of the island, while many swim
next to Portara, close to the harbour to the beach also known as Grotta.
Agios Geogrios beach offers a sports centre.
On the way to Galanado village, only 6km to the North
of Naxos town, you will find the Tower of Belonias, which offers a really
nice view over the capital of Naxos island and has a twin church. The
Iria archaeological site, four temples dedicated to Apollo, is located
near the village of Galanado.
